About the Step-Up SIP Calculator

What This Step-Up SIP Calculator Does

A Step-Up (or "top-up") SIP increases your monthly investment by a fixed percentage every year, typically in line with an expected rise in your income. This calculator projects the future value of such a SIP, alongside a regular flat SIP, so you can see the difference growing contributions makes over the long run.

The Formula

Each year is treated as its own block of 12 fixed monthly instalments, calculated with the standard SIP annuity formula, and that year's block is then compounded forward for the remaining years until your goal. At the start of every subsequent year, the monthly instalment increases by your chosen step-up percentage before the next year's block is calculated the same way.

How to Use It

Set your starting monthly investment, the annual step-up percentage, your expected return, and the total time period. The results show your total amount invested across all the (growing) instalments, the estimated returns, and the combined total value - along with roughly what your final year's monthly SIP amount would be.

Why Step-Up Matters

Most people's income rises over their career, but a flat SIP amount doesn't. A modest 10% annual step-up, matched roughly to typical salary growth, can meaningfully increase your final corpus compared to keeping the same SIP amount for 15-20 years, without ever feeling like a bigger stretch on your monthly budget than when you started.

Who This Is For

Salaried investors who expect their income to grow over time and want their investments to grow with it, rather than losing real value to inflation by staying flat.

Quick Example

A SIP starting at ₹5,000/month, stepped up 10% every year, at an expected 12% return over 15 years grows to approximately ₹43,41,925 - noticeably more than a flat ₹5,000/month SIP over the same period, since your later, larger instalments still get 10-15 years to compound.

Frequently Asked Questions

A common approach is to match your expected annual salary increment, often 8-12% for many salaried professionals, but any amount you can sustain is better than none.

This calculator is a projection tool, not a binding commitment - in practice, most AMCs let you pause or adjust a step-up SIP at any time.
