About Bandhan Mutual Fund
Bandhan Mutual Fund is run by Bandhan AMC Limited, one of India's larger fund houses, formerly known as IDFC Mutual Fund before a change in ownership and a subsequent rebrand.
Ownership and Heritage
In 2022, a consortium led by Bandhan Financial Holdings Limited, together with global investor GIC and private equity firm ChrysCapital, acquired IDFC Asset Management Company from IDFC Limited for approximately ₹4,500 crore, in a deal cleared by India's competition regulator and the RBI. Following completion of the transaction, IDFC Mutual Fund was rebranded as Bandhan Mutual Fund, with Bandhan Financial Holdings holding the largest stake in the consortium (around 60%) alongside GIC and ChrysCapital.
Fund Range and Approach
Bandhan Mutual Fund (as IDFC Mutual Fund before it) offers a broad scheme range spanning large-cap, mid-cap, small-cap and flexi-cap equity funds, sectoral and thematic funds, an extensive debt fund lineup, hybrid funds, and index/ETF offerings. The AMC has a particularly well-regarded reputation in fixed-income and debt fund management, a strength that carried over from its IDFC-era heritage.
Who Should Consider Bandhan Mutual Fund
Investors seeking a well-established, broad-range AMC with particular strength in debt and fixed-income categories - now under new ownership following a major 2022 acquisition - often consider Bandhan Mutual Fund.
Comparing Bandhan Schemes With Other Fund Houses
When comparing a Bandhan scheme against alternatives, note that older return history for a scheme may span the IDFC era before the 2022 ownership change - the underlying scheme and its investment mandate generally continued unchanged through the rebrand, but it's still worth checking whether the specific fund manager has changed since new ownership took over.
Checking a Scheme's Risk-o-Meter and Category
Every Indian mutual fund scheme is required to display a standardised risk-o-meter (ranging from "Low" to "Very High") on its factsheet, reflecting SEBI's categorisation rules for that specific fund type. Checking this alongside the scheme's exact category label - not just its name - is a quick way to confirm a fund actually matches the risk level you're comfortable with before investing.
Reading the Scheme Documents
Before investing in any specific scheme, it's worth reading its scheme information document (SID) and key information memorandum (KIM), both freely available on the AMC's own website - these spell out the exact investment mandate, risk factors, benchmark, and exit load in far more detail than any summary page, including this one, can provide.
Costs: Direct vs Regular Plans
Bandhan schemes are available as Direct Plans or Regular Plans. Use the Expense Ratio Impact Calculator on this site to estimate the long-term rupee difference between the two for a specific scheme.
Checking Fund Manager Continuity
Before relying on a Bandhan scheme's published long-term returns, check how long the current fund manager has actually run it, particularly for schemes with performance history spanning both the IDFC and Bandhan eras - a track record is most meaningful when the same manager or team delivered it. Each scheme's official factsheet shows the current manager and their tenure.
